Description Detail of a plain unadorned 32-point wind rose (or compass rose) on an anonymous Genoese portolan chart, c.1325-50 (held by the Library of Congress, Washington DC). As is standard on portolan charts, the rhumb lines emanating from the center are color-coded: black for the eight primary winds (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW),green for the eight half-winds (NNE, ENE, etc.) and red for the sixteen quarter-winds.
