Paris, musée du Louvre, département des Miniatures et Enluminures, M. I. 1093. Photo RMN Cet épisode de la vie de sainte Marguerite est emprunté à la Légende dorée de Jacques de Voragine. Fouquet a saisi le moment où le préfet Olibrius regagnant son château se détache de sa suite pour contempler Marguerite, dont il est subitement tombé amoureux. Indifférente au regard qui se pose sur elle, la jeune bergère, debout auprès de ses compagnes, file la quenouille en gardant les bêtes de sa nourrice devant un paisible paysage de campagne, où les champs s'étendent à perte de vue.
