Summary
DescriptionTrompe-l’œil still life 1655 hoogstraten.png
English: Hoogstraten was known for his illusory depictions, in this panting his stylistic tool is being used in an extremely subtle manner. The mirror hangs behind the brush, showing a reflection it. The real-life painting lacks a frame to better blend in with the wall it is hung on, amplifying the effect and thus the painting itself becomes an illusion. In the centre of the painting, partly occluded by the towel, hangs a round shape, possibly alluding to the medal of honour, with the portrait of emperor Ferdinand III embossed in it, that Hoogstraten received in Vienna. Thanks to this award, his fame quickly spread throughout the royal court of Vienna.
