• "A signed painting on cotton done by Aqa Reza after Salim's accession is preserved in the Large Clive Album, its nasta'liq inscription recording that it is 'the work of Jahangir Shah's Reza' (amal-e Reza-ye Jahangir Shah).29 The painting is one of several versions of a portrait of an Uzbek identified in 1912 by F.R. Martin as Murad Akkuyunli, 30 who was defeated and imprisoned by Shah Isma'il, the founder of the Safavid dynasty, in AH 907 (1501). They may all have been based on an original por-trait by Behzad, as suggested by Martin, as the great master's work was often copied by artists at the Mughal court. Murad Akkuyunli's face, with its wrinkled brow, downward-sloping, hooded eyes, aquiline nose and wide jaw, is highly distinctive, as are his turban, collar and the folds of his long-sleeved undergarment. The same man appears in two guises in the different versions, either holding an arrow, as here, or with his wrist fettered by a wooden palahang, a device made from a tree branch and a standard way of disabling captives."
