Summary
DescriptionYoung man reading with Vanitas still life.png
English: The identity of the young man at the desk is ambiguous, it may be Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten himself, or his brother Jan van Hoogstraten. The picture is of interest, since it combines a person with Vanitas still life elements, that being the skull, candle and the hourglass at the far end of the table – and it is Hoogstraten’s earliest dated work. It was likely created during his apprenticeship with Rembrandt, which is reinforced by his teacher’s classic stylistic tools, these being the muted colour palette, dramatic lighting and the illusionistic depiction of the paper.
